First Ever Legislative Wake-up in Nevada

On Saturday morning The League of women Voters of Ames and Story County welcomed nearly thirty Story County residents to discuss current legislative issues with their elected representatives.

Nearly 30 League members met last evening to plan next year's calendar of meeting topics and topics we encourage State or National League to support.
Discussion was, as usual, lively and many faceted.

LEGISLATIVE FORUMS IN NEVADA

The League of Women Voters of Ames and Story County will host two Legislative "Wake-Up" forums in Nevada during the 2016 Legislative session.   All Legislators representing Story County will be invited to give brief presentations about the issues they think will be important during these sessions and to answer your questions.

Please join us at the Nevada City Council Chambers on January 23 at 8:45 a.m. for a brief social time (with coffee and pastries).  The forum will be from 9:00 - 10:15.  The second forum will be held on March 26, at the same time and location.

State of the Community Addresses

The League of Women Voters of Ames & Story County and the Ames Chamber of Commerce will cosponsor the State of the Community Addresses on January 14 from 7:00pm - 9:00pm in the Ames City Council Chambers at City Hall on 515 Clark Ave, Ames.  Important events and accomplishments of 2015 will be shared as well as a look ahead to special events, issues, and challenges expected for the current year.  The speakers will include Ann Campbell, Mayor of the City of Ames; Luke Deardorff, President of the Ames School Board; Sarah Buck, Chair of the Mary Greeley Medical Center Board of Trustees; Paul Toot, Chair of the Story County Board of Supervisors and Miles Lackey, Associate Vice-president and Chief of Staff at Iowa State University.  The speakers will take comments and questions from the audience. The first 2016 Legislative Wake-up held Saturday morning in the Ames city council chambers was very informative.   George Belitsos moderated as State Representative Lisa Heddens, State Representative Beth Wessell-Kroeschell and State Senator Herman Quirmbach answered questions from the audience. Medicaid privatization, Education, Mental Health, Water Quality, Online Voter Registration, The Caucus System and Gun Safety were among the topics discussed.
