The statewide kickoff for the 19th Amendment Centennial Commemoration is coming up on Feb. 14, 2020.

The
theme of the year’s events is “Hard Won. Not Done.”

As part of the kickoff event, award-winning journalist and writer Elaine Weiss will speak about the lessons of the woman suffrage movement and the relevance of its themes in 2020. She will deliver her talk, “The Woman’s Hour,” at 1 p.m. in the Great Hall of the Memorial Union.

The kickoff will also feature a performance of “The Yellow Rose of Suffrage” by Iowa State University theater professor emerita Jane Cox; breakout sessions that will address the often-overlooked contributions of African-American, immigrant and working class women and place the suffrage story into the larger context of the expansion of voting rights; and performances of suffrage songs and selections from a new musical, “The Suffragist.”

The kickoff is free and open to the public. For a full agenda of the afternoon's events, visit https://19th-amendment-centennial.org/19th-amendment-centen….
